Charity Training SessionA big thank you to everyone who attended it was great to see the whole club together at training.
About the Club
The
club was founded in February 1996 under the name of Inverkeithing Boys
Club and trained at Inverkeithing Hight School. At this stage there
were sixteen boys playing seven-a-side soccer. Due to a chance
conversation with one of the coach’s Aunties who stayed in Edinburgh,
the boys were invited to play in the Edinburgh League. At this stage
the boys playing were all seven. One of the league’s criteria was that
if a new club joined, they must have teams at under 8s, under 9s and
under 10s. The decision was made to move to the Hillfield playing
fields, and advertise in the local primary school for players at 8s, 9s
and 10s.
On the first Saturday
over 100 kids turned up! Over the next month coaches were quickly
appointed, and the club soon had teams in all three divisions in
Edinburgh; Pele, Maradonna and Zidane, at all age groups with sixteen
coaches.
Around 1997, Edward
Spence was approached by the Cowdenbeath manager, Craig Levein to
become an academy for Cowdenbeath Blue Brazil, and for the next year or
two the club’s name was Inverkeithing Blue Brazil.
In
1999 the club broke away from Blue Brazil, had a meeting at
the Hillfield portakabin, and after much discussion came up with the
present name, Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts. The Hillfield Swifts part
is taken from the famous Swifts of the 60s/70s era. It was also decided
at the meeting that the club would take the colours of the local
primary school (yellow/blue).
Since
the name Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts was adopted, the club has moved
on to a period of tremendous success and stature in the East of
Scotland football scene, and has a proud record of when any of our
teams have played at a final at a senior ground, we have not been
beaten.
To sum up the success of
our teams over a ten year period, we have trained over 1200 boys and
girls, and currently have teams from under 7s right through to under
15s.
To celebrate 10 years, the
club recently held a dance, and at the end of this season the teams
will play Falkirk FC in an invitation match.
Three
of the four founder members, Eddie Spence, Barry McMahon and Damie
Hildrew are still with the club. The fourth member, Gary McCann moved
on after six years.
The teams now
enjoy the facilities at the Ballast Bank, and the club has a wealth of
up and coming young talent, producing some fantastic football for
Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts.
Yours in Sport
Eddie Spence
